The Bennington

A craftsman working far from a city or large town would often generally follow the finer designs that were made by urban cabinetmakers, but would often impart their own imagination and style. The Bennington reflects a country interpretation of early Federal design. It includes an over-mantel that travels only part way up the wall, ending in a top shelf. Your collection of pottery, glassware, photographs or other items can be displayed and grouped attractively on the top shelf as well as the mantel shelf. The shelves are separated by a solid hardwood floating panel that is tacked to remain in position but allowed to react naturally to changes in humidity and temperature. The large hand planed and scraped cove moldings that lie under each shelf are slightly elliptical, and provide a pleasing transition between the shelves and the legs of the mantel.
