The Newburyport

Interior decoration at the end of the eighteenth century was affected by the prosperity that ship owners and merchants in coastal cities and towns enjoyed from the China trade. Design elements, such as stylized chrysanthemum blossoms, were adapted from Chinese porcelain and textiles, and appear in the field beneath the mantel shelf of the Newburyport. They are centered in drapery swags and pendants. The field is set off by a double row of moldings: the upper is an ogee, the lower is a bead. Both moldings wrap around the pilasters and continue around the sides of the mantel. The bead profile is repeated in the molding that edges the pilasters. Each end of the shelf is stepped back. The molding that surrounds the shelf extends slightly beyond the lower edge of the shelf, ending in a cavetto.
