The Saybrook

The Saybrook

The interior of houses constructed during the late seventeenth century appear quite plain when compared to later styles. Exposed beams and plank paneled walls were common, door and window casings were simple, and elaborate crown molding was not yet widespread. The woodwork surrounding the fireplace may have been more ornate because the hearth was the heart of the house.

The Saybrook exhibits bold profiles. The proportions of the fascia and large ovolo in the sturdy mantel shelf harmonize with the astragal and cove that appear in the bolection molding that surrounds the firebox, and which produce strong shadow lines. The plinth that the bolection molding rests on balances the mantel shelf and adds a degree of refinement.
